Is your doctor in network
for 2027?

Many people in Vancouver get care from Vancouver Clinic, PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, or Kaiser Permanente, and many cross the river to Portland hospitals. Most Medicare Advantage plans, including HMOs and PPOs, use provider networks, and networks can change between plan years and during the year. Here’s how to check before you choose 2027 coverage.

WHY IT MATTERS

How your coverage
treats your doctors.

Your doctors and your coverage type work together. Understanding the difference makes the rest of the checking easier.

ORIGINAL MEDICARE

Any provider that accepts Medicare.

With Original Medicare, you can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. A Medigap policy, if you have one, works alongside it. Medicare SELECT policies are the exception: they can require network hospitals, and sometimes network doctors, for full benefits.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE HMO

Generally in network only.

HMO plans generally require you to use doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network, except for emergency care, out-of-area urgent care, and temporary out-of-area dialysis. Some require referrals to see specialists.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PPO

In network costs less.

PPO plans let you see providers outside the network, usually at a higher cost. Out-of-network/non-contracted providers are under no obligation to treat plan members, except in emergency situations. Call the plan’s customer service number or see its Evidence of Coverage for more information, including the cost-sharing that applies to out-of-network services.

FIVE STEPS

How to check your doctors for 2027.

STEP 01

Make your list.

Write down every doctor and specialist you see, the clinic location, the hospital you’d want to use, and where you go for lab work or imaging. Include your pharmacy.

STEP 02

Ask the billing office.

Call your clinic’s billing or insurance line, not just the front desk. Ask: “Which Medicare Advantage plans will Dr. ___ be in network with for 2027?” Ask about the doctor by name, not just the clinic, and about the hospital they use.

STEP 03

Check the plan’s directory.

Search the plan’s own provider directory and make sure it shows the 2027 plan year and the exact plan name. Plans from the same company can have different networks.

STEP 04

Compare in Plan Finder.

Medicare.gov’s Plan Finder lists the plans available in your ZIP code and estimates costs for your prescriptions. Use it alongside each plan’s directory.

STEP 05

Get it confirmed.

Directories aren’t always current. Note who you spoke with and when. If a doctor is essential to you, confirm with both the office and the plan.

A NOTE FOR 2027

Don’t assume this year’s
network carries over.

Several changes have been announced for the Portland–Vancouver area in 2027, including Providence Health Plan ending its Medicare Advantage plans. Some plans have also announced changes to which hospitals and clinics are in their networks.

Even if you’re keeping the same plan, check that your doctors are still in network before December 7.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About doctors
and networks.

Why don’t you just list which plans each clinic accepts?

Networks are specific to each plan and doctor, and they can change from year to year and during the year. Medicare also has rules about how agents can advertise plan details. The most reliable answer comes from checking your doctors against specific plans, which we do with you one-on-one.

My doctor says they “take Medicare.” Isn’t that enough?

Accepting Original Medicare doesn’t mean a doctor is in every Medicare Advantage plan’s network. Ask specifically about the plan you’re considering for 2027.

Can my doctor leave my plan’s network during the year?

Yes, networks can change during the year. Plans are generally required to notify affected members. If it happens, contact us and we’ll talk through your options.

What if my doctor isn’t in any plan I like?

You have options, including Original Medicare with a separate drug plan and possibly a Medigap policy. The right choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and enrollment rights.
